Where can you swim in Lisbon: List of public pools and tips

Lisbon has plenty of public pool facilities for you to swim laps or just to enjoy a leisurely dip. If you want to maintain your swimming routine, you can choose from Lisbon’s municipal pools, outdoor ocean pools and hotel pools. Many are centrally located; others are further afield in Cascais and Sintra.

Guide to Lisbon’s Pools (including Cascais and Sintra)

Most municipal pools in Lisbon are run by the local council and many require that you pay for registration before you can use the facilities. Some request a monthly entry fee rather than payment per session. Most have timetables for classes, so you should check in advance if the lap pool will be available.

• Most lap pools in Lisbon’s swim centers are 25m (82ft) long, which is half the length of an olympic swimming pool 
• Most require you to wear a swimming cap, and some also ask for flip flops (plastic slippers to wear in the showers)
• In the São Vicente pool in Alfama, women are to wear a full-piece swimsuit, rather than a 2-piece

Overall, in the Lisbon municipal pools especially, expect a lot more initial paperwork/fees than just paying for an individual entry ticket at the door. But if swimming is an integral part of your exercise regime, it’s worth it – and very affordable if you opt for the monthly fee.

PUBLIC POOLS IN LISBON

Piscina Municipal de Campo de Ourique

Piscina Municipal de Campo de Ourique is a modern and well-equipped indoor swim centre with 2 pools. The lap pool is 25m long with 6 lanes. There’s also a kids’ pool.

This facility is contracted to Ginásio Clube Português, but you don’t need to be a Ginásio member to access it and the pool is one of the best in Lisbon.

Piscina do Oriente

Piscina do Oriente is run by the Parque das Nações local council. It’s a modern well equipped swim centre that includes a 25m lap pool with 6 lanes. At the time of writing you need to pay for registration to use the facility.

Piscina de Santa Clara

Piscina de Santa Clara is another well-equipped indoor swimming facility run by the local council. The lap pool is 25m with 6 lanes and there’s a pool for children.

Piscina do Alvito

Piscina do Alvito is a well-maintained indoor sporting complex in the Lisbon suburb of Alcântara. Like most Lisbon municipal swim centres it offers a learning pool plus a 25m lap pool with 6 lanes.

Piscina das Avenidas Novas is an indoor municipal pool managed Avenidas Novas. It’s a modern swimming facility with the usual children’s pool and a 25m lap pool. If you pay monthly you only pay 2.50 euros per visit. Otherwise it’s 5.00 for an entry.

Complexo Desportivo Bairro da Boavista  offers nicely equipped pool in Lisbon suburb of Benfica. The lap pool is 25m long with 8 lanes.

Piscina de São Vicente This is a small 3 lane pool only 1.20m at its deepest. It’s run by the São Vicente parish in Alfama and it was built for its residents. Take a cap and flip flops. Women need to wear a full-piece suit.

OCEAN POOLS IN LISBON and OUTSKIRTS

Lisbon’s ocean pools are salt water pools that adjoin a beach and their water is ocean water. They are very popular in summer and usually close in winter.

Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras

The deeper saltwater pool at Piscina Oceânica de Oeiras has an approximate area of 1500m2 and 1.2 – 2m in depths. It’s located in the Lisbon suburb of and Oeiras and it’s a 20-minute walk from the Santo Amaro station and a bit more from the Oeiras station. It’s very popular in summer.

Grande Real Villa Itália

The pool Grande Real Villa Itália is set in the well-kept grounds of this hotel on the edge of Cascais’ coast. The rectangular pool has 200m2 where you try to swim laps if its not busy. You can relax in the deck chairs and order a meal from the snack bar.

Piscina Oceânica Alberto Romano

The Piscina Oceânica Alberto Romano was built into the “paredão de Cascais”, a 3km coastal walkway from Estoril to Cascais. You can pause at this spot overlooked by the Palmela palace to do some curving 50m laps.

Piscina do Arribas Sintra Hotel

The pool at Arribas Sintra Hotel is one of the largest in Europe (approximately 100m in length). It overlooks the surf at Praia Grande in Sintra, and enjoys great views. It belongs to the hotel but anyone can gain access if they buy a ticket.

The are two pools in the Piscina da Praia da Maçãs complex, as well as a restaurant and bar. The deeper pool is very large and the children’s pool is equipped with water slides.

Many of the higher end hotels in Lisbon have indoor or rooftop pools, or both. The Lisbon hotel pools listed below are open to the public – usually for a steep price, but the admission fee often comes with perks.
